Day 9 – Keld to Reeth

It was a little further than the 18 km we expected – we actually walked 21.7kms. Stedman said that many people prefer the Swaledale Valley alternative (along the river) to the high level route, and as we were still experiencing wet weather (showers now though rather than constant rain) we opted for the lower level route.

We thankfully missed the famous Reeth show, complete with Karaoke and inflatable Sumo wrestling at the local pub – but the fact that the show was on meant that more places than normal were closed for the day. Reeth traditionally had days for their show while the Muker show day would be fine.

We headed to Muker for morning tea at the tea shop (as suggested but Tony) only to discover that it was closed! So we had a cup of tea from the flask outside the tea shop. The local publican took exception to this as said he thought we were “Being a little bit cheeky”. We thought that as they were closed it would be fine – apparently not – so much for northern hospitality. People at a later stay said he was a bit of a misery – we’ll go along with that. Turns out that Gunnerside where it was suggested we have lunch was also closed on a Tuesday! Just as well we had a good supply of scroggin, biscuits and fruit with us.

We are not surprised the Swalwdale is so green!

As has been the norm for us the rain started about half an hour before we reached our accommodation for the night. This meant we arrived wet (as usual) and had to rely on the B&B to get stuff dry for us.

When we got to Reeth it was only to discover that instead of one double and one twin room we had two twin rooms up two flights of stairs and one overlooked two nice fat smelly sows, a fact Carol and Steve didn’t discover until Carol had opened the windows wide for some fresh air. Although the owner was nice it wasn’t one of the best places we stayed at.
