Day 7 – Orton to Kirkby Stephen

A 21.7km walk – in the rain again!

We left Orton with Mal and Morag as travelling companions. They came with us before finding a suitable point to return to their car and drive back to Edinburgh. However, this was not before we convinced Mal to participate in some gurning with Steve and I. We also got a group shot – well if I hadn’t slipped over and Mal hadn’t tried to catch me…

Where's Mal and Frank... ...oh! There they are!

P8230931After leaving Mal and Morag it began to rain so on went the waterproofs – yet again! There was supposed to be a fair amount of road walking on this leg but they have diverted people away from the road and across a moor. This was signposted early on but the signs ran out and in the rain we had our first navigational challenge. We missed a turn off on the moor amongst the myriad of tracks and ended up about 500 metres off course.

After correcting this we were trudging through the rain looking for a suitable lunch venue. This was proving to be a challenge until we got to Bent’s Camping Barn. We (cheekily) entered their property and found the barn to be a dry warm place. I went over to the farm and asked (Mrs Bent?) if we could possibly use the barn just to have lunch. She was more than agreeable so we had lunch in the dry, dried some of our gear on the heater in there and warmed our lunch in the microwave – luxury!

The track from there was fairly mundane with only a few sights/sites of interest. Probably the most exciting thing that happened was that at the last style before Kirkby Stephen I stepped onto the bottom stone and lost all concept of time and motion before finding myself flat out on the ground. Nothing injured and just a muddy bum – luckily this was not one of the styles where cows or sheep congregate underneath!

We stayed at Fletcher House B&B in Kirkby Stephen run by Gillian and Steve with wonderfully quiet efficiency. It was a very pleasant place with large, modern, airy rooms.
